The Canadian Canoe Museum in Peterborough, Ontario, features Pierre Trudeau’s iconic buckskin canoeing jacket.
The accompanying text says:
Because of his interest in Algonquin culture, when Pierre Trudeau became Prime Minister of Canada the Maniwaki Chamber of Commerce commissioned Mary Commanda to make this buckskin coat for him.
The buttons of antler were made by William Commanda.
Wearing it with his beaded buckskin gloves and using his Peterborough Canoe Company paddle, Pierre Trudeau was equipped for a quiet autumn outing on lakes in the Laurentian hills near Ottawa.
An evocative and very Canadian artefact.
The Canadian Canoe Museum is museum no. 52 in my #100museums challenge (see 100 Museums Challenge).
